The outcome of the study suggests the need for art experiences exploring gender and sexuality among other identities, to meet the needs of a changing society. Workshop results exhibited nine themes, defined through qualitative measures: Self-‐‑ Observation, Reclaiming, Performativity, Utopia, Love, Community, Safety, Spirituality, and Integration.

Postmodern therapy practices, as well as LGBTQIA mental health research, provide context for situating queer femme within art therapy. A scholarly review traces how femme was traditionally understood in a lesbian context, and how intersectional feminisms and queer theory led to a more profound awareness of identity and difference. This project, inspired and informed by personal experience, explores queer femme through art and reflection. Queer femme is defined as a personal identification with femininity coupled with a simultaneous rejection of socially mandated binary gender roles. LGBTQIA issues are underrepresented in art therapy literature. Queer femme is one specific LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/trans, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual or ally) gender identity. In My Gender Workbook, transgender activist Kate Bornstein brings theory down to Earth and provides a practical approach to living with or without a gender.
